One of my favorite things to see in Golden Gate park during October is seeing the last blooms in the Dahlia Circle just off the Conservatory of Flowers.
This circle garden has been open to the public since the 1920’s. Dahlias are the official flower of San Francisco, which makes sense in this town full of unique and colorful districts and people.
There is an international selection of specialty tubers and hybrid flowers grown in the circle and along the hillside of this wonderful garden. Tubers coming from New Zealand, South Africa, England and even Mexico are highlighted in this international extravaganza – and what a show it is!
There are over 500 + plants that are cared for, dug up and re-planted every year along this garden and well maintained by the Dahlia Society – what dedication and fantastic tribute to their admiring audiences visiting the park.

Wow, those are some glorious dahlia shots, Plant Fanatic! I so love dahlias but have no luck growing them in my part of Florida. I wonder what I'm doing wrong. Looks like San Francisco is the perfect locale for growing them. For some reason, those lyrics about "putting flowers in your hair" will be going through my head all night now.
Beautiful close-ups Noel. I still remember your post about SF last year, when you went uphill in that secluded forested area. BTW, i haven't seen dahlia here for quite a while, wonder why not many people plant them here when they are so easy to care for.

I love dahlias and have planted quite a lot of them years ago. Unfortunately, they do not do very well here in the tropics as they'll wilt pretty soon. I will settle for admiring them digitally.

Greetings Noel, What a spectacular collectionof Dahlias. They do make such a glorious splash of colour at this time of year. There seem to be an endless variety of types, tints and tones that you show here. It really must be an amazing sight.
I never realised that the Dahlia is the official flower of San Francisco. As you say, it is a good choice!

Noel I'm not a big fan of dahlia's due to those dreadful earwigs that they seem to attract over here but that display is amazing and the work that goes into to lifting those tubers and caring for them in the early spring requires such dedication. Over here I am used to seeing rows of dahlias on some peoples allotments.

You have some amazing close ups of the Dahlias. I have dug mine up for the winter and put them in storage. Hope they survive:)

Thank you so much for the wonderful flowers! I love dahlias but they don't last very long here in the semi-tropics! This is the first year in a long time I haven't had them, so I really loved looking at these beauties in San Francisco.
Glorious photos as ever Noel. I love the idea of a Dahlia Dell - must be a bit of an assault on the eyes though, so much saturated colour in such a small space!
