Cattleyas Blooming for Aloha Friday

Its another Aloha Friday, have a fantastic day. I'm presenting this beautiful cattleya blooming this morning. Its called Cattleya Halona Belle 'Volcano Queen'. Isn't it a real show stopper?

This is a beautiful hybrid that came from Akatsuka Orchid Gardens and nursery up in Volcano Hawaii which specializes in cattleyas and is one of the largest orchid growers in Hawaii. Their growing nursery is unique in that it is located in the higher elevations of the rain forests which have cooler temperatures of 40 to 70 degrees year round. The ideal growing conditions should be anywhere from 70 to 90 degrees which is more suitable in the lower coastal areas. I will write about Akatsuka's in a later post on how he was able to create an optimal growing environment for his hybrids and other specialty orchids to be a major exporter of orchids in Hawaii.

These cattleyas are hard grown (hard grown means that the orchid plant was not babied in any way) so they develop bigger and studier with strong leaves and maintain brighter and longer lasting blooms.

For more information on cattleya orchid care you can visit this site, http://www.orchids-plus-more.com/cattleya-orchid-care.html. Or you can easily google cattleya orchid care and find alot of information and growing these beauties.

Greetings Noel, What amazing plants these Cattleyas are. I have never heard of them let alone ever grown one. They are just the most exotic looking flowers I have seen and are captured so wonderfully by your fabulous close-up photograph.

As you so aptly say, Cattleya is a show stopper!!

Ah, blissful. I'm not able to move on to catts yet, just phalaenopsis and one paph. so I'll enjoy yours with a wistful sigh, and dream of winning the lottery so I can build a solarium. Or move to Hawaii.

Halona Belle even sounds lovely and exotic. I know, I know, a rose would smell as sweet and all that... she'd be gorgeous under any name we chose. I love that pink and yellow combination. It's so sweet and girly. :)

Hello, Noel! Your post, as always, is amazing. This orchid is so pretty...peachy soft! It reminds me of a bearded iris, sort of. I've not heard of this variety...will be on the watch during this year's orchid shows.

I really wanted to stop at this nursery when we were out your way but didn't (kept driving) since a lot of those type of places aren't crazy about photogs.

Your cattleya is really beautiful. I happen to love the fragrance most of them have, too.

I will definitely give them a try if I can find any that are sensibly priced around here. There are a few in the estate's Orchid collection but I don't think that they have rebloomed for me. I will have to check it out.
